History of Hawley
Located along U.S. Highway 10, Hawley is situation almost directly between the metropolitan area of Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN and the lakes country of Detroit Lakes, MN. This unique setting provides a quick commute to Fargo/Moorhead for almost unlimited employment opportunities plus a quick commute to Minnesota's famous lakes region.
Hawley is home to 2,074 residents and approximately 854 housesholds (2011 survey). The community is located in a beautiful setting of the Buffalo River valley. The community has a storied history dating back to the late 1800's. In a short period from 1871 to 1872 Hawley went through six quick name changes until it finally decided to name the town after Thomas Hawley Canfield who originally laid out the community.
Perhaps Hawley's most famous historical significance comes from the work of a one man and his dream to build and sail a Viking ship. Robert Asp worked as a High School counselor in a nearby town and chose Hawley as the city where he would build his dream. The vessel was constructed over a decade with help from many locals and the city. The Hjemkomst as it came to be called eventually sailed from Duluth, MN to Oslo, Norway. The vessel itself it currently on display at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, MN. Parks
Hawley currently has 5 different parks for children to enjoy. The biggest is located at the Elementary School on the north side of town adjacent to 7th Street. The next largest park is the Westgate Park (or according to my young son "The Big Brown Park"). It is located at the intersection of Westgage Circle and Hartford Street. The most unique park might be the Riverbend Park. This park is located on the south side of Highway 10 and just west of the golf course entrance. The park features slides, swings, playground equipment as well as 6 horseshoe courts, and a disc golf course with up to 12 holes. The final two parks are Brekken Park (my son calls this park "Eddie's Park" because it is close to our house) located near the crossroads of Peters Street and 1st Street and Community Kids Park (The "Blue Park" according to Eddie) located at the intersection of 5th Street and Main Street.
Other City Attractions
Hawley Golf and Country Club: The most unique course in the state of Minnesota. Offers 3 FREE holes you can play anytime you want! 18 Hole par 71 course with reasonable green fees and membership rates. 218-483-4808
